December 18, 2017.....Hoban and Hoffman are 2017 "Christmas Scramble" Champs...Russo and Alestock Pocket 5 Skins...Great Day at Avalon!!!

Dan Hoban, PGA Director of Golf at Middletown GC (the old Langhorne CC) reached out to one of his star players from Roman Catholic High School, Anthony Hoffman, and they teamed up to win the Open division gross prize in the Christmas Scramble at Avalon. Dan has been the golf coach at Roman for many years and Anthony was a standout player there. They combined for a winning total of 64...seven under par. Open net honors went to Dan Britt and Rich Wade from Golden Pheasant as they carded a nice 61. In the Senior division, Joe Russo from Laurel Creek and Running Deer's Tom Alestock were virtually flawless as they posted a 10 under par 61 to win gross. On the way they captured five "skins", which is a new Scramble record. Low net in the Seniors went to Juniata's (Philadelphia) Bob Wheeler and Bill Giulian on the strength of a great 64. "Wheels" is the operator of Juniata Golf Course and is a retired Philly policeman, as is Bill Giulian...good guys and I know you join me to say "Thanks for your service". The Super Seniors had some tough competition and Bob Dicicco from Sicklerville and Wedgwood's Sam Morris played some nice team golf to post a 5 under 66 to grab the gross first place money. SS net went to Bruce Schaffer from Hickory Valley and Steve Walinsky playing out of Buena Vista as they teamed up for a crushing 10 under 61.

A big "Thank You" to Ted Wenner and Dennis Jones for their efforts to make our day at Avalon so enjoyable. Looks like we made the right call in moving the event from Friday to Monday. We're taking a couple weeks off for the holidays, but back in action on January 5th 2018 at Indian Spring Golf Club.

December 16, 2017....."We're Still Playing at Avalon on Monday"

Just checked in with folks at the Avalon Golf Club and Dennis Jones advises that they got less than an inch of snow and is going away pretty fast today. Barring any more precipitation, we are good to go at Avalon this Monday form the annual Christmas Scramble. Conditions will be a little on the wet side and we may be confined to cartpaths, but the forcast is for temps around 50F and light breezes. We're starting with a 10:00AM shotgun and Al, Pat and I will be there from 8:00 with coffee and donuts.

A reminder that the teams will compete in divisions based on ages....example; an Open player and a Senior player teamed up will compete in the Open division, but the Senior will play from the White tees. A Senior and Super Senior team would compete in the Senior division and the Super Senior would play from the Gold tees. If anyone is looking for a partner, Bob Cisowski needs one...call or text me and I'll set it up; 856-264-8405.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at Avalon on Monday and please, Travel Safe.

December 13, 2017.....Christmas Scramble Rescheduled for Monday 12/18

With a weather forecast calling for temperatures in mid to low 30's and light winds gusting to 30MPH at Avalon this Friday, we are moving the event to Monday, December 18th. Winds chills are projected to be in mid teens and these are not safe or pleasant conditions in which to play golf. On Monday we are looking a temperatures in mid 50's and very light westerly breezes. We will still start the event with a 10:00AM shotgun and it would be helpful if you would call, text or email your team and/or foursome. Text to 856-264-8405.

We have sent an email message out to everyone and posted info on Facebook. Hopefully, the news will get around and if you could call your team mate and foursomes and let them know, it would be very helpful. Thanks for your patience and cooperation and we'll look forward to seeing you at Avalon on next Monday....TRAVEL SAFE!!!

trees-snow

Snow is in the forecast for next Thursday and Friday and the Christmas Scramble at Avalon is on temporary hold, pending the weather prospects. We will keep a close eye on things and make go/no go call by 4:00PM on Thursday. The following Monday 12/18 looks much better and affords us an opportunity to reschedule. Keep an eye on this website and the AWGL Facebook.

December 9, 2017.....Britt Aces the 17th at Stone Harbor...Alestock Shoots Three Under 69 for Senior Win.

Dan Britt from Golden Pheasant notched his fourth career hole in one with a great shot on the 17th at Stone Harbor during the seventh AWGL event of the season. The eagle helped take Dan to a one over 73...good enough for the gross win in the Open division. Open net first place went to Mike Olson from Medford Village as he posted a 72. Running Deer's Tom Alestock continued on his current hot streak with a 3 under 69 to win Senior gross. Tom's last two rounds have been even par 72 at Ramblewood and the outstanding 3 under 69 at Stone Harbor. Senior net first place money went to Gary Peart from Centerton on the strength of his 70. He beat out Running Deer player, Bob Brunner in a match of handicaps 11 to 13. The Super Seniors (age 66 and up) put up some nice numbers as Moorestown FC member, Jon Mabry carded a 77 for low gross. John Capotosti, playing out of Buena Vista, shot a very good 85 to go with his 16 handicap for a net winning 69. Thanks to the generous contribution of Brad Mills, owner of Big Swing Golf Center in Sewell, NJ, Dan Ayars will take home a $30 gift card for his 2' 7" closest to pin shot on hole #12. Big Swing has a great indoor golf simulator with several of the world's great courses on it. Sounds like a perfect place to be on a cold winter afternoon. Brad only charges $30 per hour and four guys can play 18 holes in 3 hours or less and a little over $20 per player. Semi enclosed and heated tees at Big Swing will enable you to keep your game sharp throughout the winter.

Thanks very much to PGA Director of Golf Matt Crowley and his staff for a very enjoyable day at the beautiful Stone Harbor Golf Club. We always have a super time there and the Christmas decorations really put you in the "Spirit of the Season".

We've been getting a steady flow of entries for the "Christmas Scramble" next Friday at Avalon. You may bring a non-member as your partner as long as he/she has a verifiable handicap. The format is two person scramble over 18 holes with prizes in three divisions for gross and net. Handicaps will be combined and divided by four (1/4) to determine net places. If you have a team and/or foursome, please text me (856-264-8405) with it and I will assign a starting hole to you. Thanks in advance for your cooperation as this makes the sign in process much easier and expeditious.

This beautiful Christmas tree greeted everyone on entering the Stone Harbor Clubhouse

With temps in the high 30's and light winds taking the chill to low 30's at Stone Harbor these guys were nicely bundled up. Catalytic heaters in their carts made the day a little more comfortable.

A happy bunch here and they didn't let the chiily shore conditions lessen their enjoyment of the nice Stone Harbor layout. L to R; Robert Smith, Dave Jacobson, Jon Mabry and Jim Soukup

December 7, 2017.....Christmas "Scramble" Set for Friday 12/15/2017 at Avalon

Entries are starting to come in for the Christmas Scramble and the tee sheet is filling up. You may team up with a non-member for this special event...all we ask is that you have a valid current handicap. The format is two person (ladies very welcome) scramble and each player will play from tees designated by age. 10:00AM shotgun start. In the event of players in two different divisions, you would score in the lower age division...example; a senior playing with an open would compete in the open division, but would play from the white tees. The entry fee for the Scramble is $60 to provide a few extra dollars for holiday gratuities.

Tomorrow we play the beautiful Stone Harbor Golf Club and the weather forecast is for clear skies and a bit on the cold side...high of 41 degrees. The Big Swing Driving Range has come on board as a supporting partner and owner, Brad Mills has put up a $30 gift card good for the indoor simulator at Big Swing. We will award the gift card to the Closest to Pin winner at SH. Please plan to have your team ready for the Christmas Scramble and we will enter it on the tee sheet.

December 2, 2017.....Mike Olson Takes Open at Ramblewood with 74...Joe Russo Cards 70 for Senior Win...Ted Pregartner's Career Low Net 60 Leads Super Seniors.

Ron Jaworski's Ramblewood Country Club was in beautiful Fall condition and the field played some very nice golf on this interesting and challenging Marlton course. New AWGL member, Mike Olson from Medford Village turned in a solid 2 over 74 to win the top gross prize in the Open division. Little Mill pro, George Frake won the Open net with 72. Frake beat Tom Emanuel, playing out of Golden Pheasant in a playoff of handicaps 2 to 9. Senior division saw Joe Russo from Laurel Creek finish first in gross with a two under 70. Close behind Joe was Running Deer's Tom Alestock on the strength of his steady even par 72. Centerton's Mark Wiley went low with 68 and pocketed the 1st place money in Senior net. Steady play by Naz Gagliardi produced a 76 which was good enough to give the Bensalem (PA) player a win in Super Senior gross. Great playing by Ted Pregartner, out of Merchantville GC yeilded a net 60....78 with an 18 handicap and Ted grabbed SS net. Thanks to Bill McCoy, PGA Director of Golf at Ramblewood and his great staff for a super effort to make our day so enjoyable. Ron and Liz Jaworski were on hand and especially pleased to host us at RCC.

Over the past couple weeks I've heard from several members about the change in age levels for Senior and Super Senior divisions. Seems that we may have moved the age requirement for SS a little too high. Many have expressed a desire to have the age for Super Senior returned to 65 and up. We're going to try this age breakdown at Stone Harbor next Friday:      Open Division: Ages 18 and up

Senior Division: Ages 50 to 65

Super Senior Division: Ages 66 and Up

Reminder that in the Christmas Scramble at Avalon on December 15th is a two-person scramble with prizes for gross and net. A member may bring a non-member as a partner and a verifiable handicap would be recquired. In past events we've had father/son or daughter, husband/wife/neighbor/friend, etc. Tournament format is 18 holes of strokeplay and the combined handicaps are divided by four (1/4) for net results. Partners in two different divisions would compete in the lowest division...example; a senior playing with an open player would compete in the open division, but would play from the white tees. Super senior and senior would compete in senior division and super senior would play the gold tees. We're going to make up a detailed rules sheet to be available at Stone Harbor so things will be clear for the event.

Our cordial host, Ron Jaworski joined a table of today's contestants at Ramblewood. L to R; John McKeown, "Jaws", Joe Casey, Marco DiBattista and Mike Olson.

Middletown GC pro, Dan Hoban carded a smooth 74 to take the Open division gross at Pennsauken CC last Friday, while John Jester playing out of Barefoot Resort won the Open net prize on one under 69. M Golf Center's Mike Owsik made it two wins this season, taking Senior gross with 71. John McKeown from the host club pocketed first place Senior net money with a nice 71. Super Seniors saw Moorestown FC player, Jon Mabry go low and finish atop the gross division list with 75. Centerton's Mike DeCriscio turned in a great net 70 for a win in Super Seniors. Closest to the pin on hole #3 was won by Bill Jensen...the Medford Village linksman hit it 4'11".

The Pennsauken CC layout was in beautiful condition and a big Thank You goes out to Quentin Griffith and his great staff for making our day so enjoyable. November 14, 2017.....Little Mill Pro...George Frake Goes Low for Open Win with 75

Mother Nature threw us another curve and the rainy conditions turned the beautiful Woodcrest layout into a real test of golfing skills and endurance. Given the conditions, Frake's 75 was especially notable and reflective of his considerable links skills. George double up with three skins to add to his total. From the host club, pro Zak Smith took Open net with 71. Running Deer's, Tom Alestock posted a 74 to take Senior division gross, while Gary Peart from Centerton shot a nice 71 for a win in Senior net. Jon Mabry from Moorestown FC continued his winning ways win a gross win in Super Seniors. Playing out of Golden Pheasant, Ed Witczak toured the tough Woodcrest tract in 87 to go with his 13 handicap for a winning 74 in Super Senior net. Many thanks to Woodcrest Director of Golf, Bill Torlucci and his outstanding staff for showing us a nice day of golf. Next Friday we head to Pennsauken CC and PGA Golf Director, Quentin Griffith is ready for us and promises a real nice day of golf.

Thanks to AWGL member, Jim Babst, I've been in conversation with Pat Sullivan of Philly PubLinks Golf about a new app for recording and reporting tournament results. Thinking about heading in a new direction in order to improve reporting and reduce the costs of maintaing a website. Stay tuned as more information is coming. See everyone at Pennsauken on friday and.....Please! Drive safe.

November 11, 2017.....Freezing Wind Chills Hit Us At Running Deer...4 Clears for Fuller

The forecast of below freezing wind chills reduced the field at Running Deer, but the stalwarts who braved the elements found a beautifully conditioned course and put up some nice numbers. Dan Ayars from Centerton made it two wins in a row as he won the Open division gross with 78. Salem's Lodie von Tonder took Open net money with a 77. Lodie also pocketed cash for his three skins. Senior division gross went to Mike Owsik playing out of M Golf Center in PA, as he posted a 77 and won the playoff with his 1 handicap. Philly Fire Captain, Jim Babst was low in the Senior net with a 70. The fine J.F. Byrne player won a playoff with his 7 handicap. There was another playoff in the Super Seniors and Jon Mabry from the Moorestown Field Club topped the gross group with an 83 to go with his 4 handicap. Mike DeCriscio from Centerton won SS net by a stroke over Ray Fuller from the host club,,,76 to 77. Great big thank you to Klay Knerr, Director of Golf, for a real nice day. Keep in mind that we are returning to Running Deer on March 2, 2018 for the first ever AWGL Pro-Am. Details on this special event will follow.

Tomorrow we head to Woodcrest CC and Director of Golf, Bill Torlucci advises that the course is in fantastic shape and the weather forcast is a lot better than last Friday. We'll be there at 8:00am with coffee and donuts in preparation for the 10:00am shotgun start. Travel Safe!

November 4, 2017.....Russo Makes Ten 3's Enroute to 63 in Opener at Avalon

Laurel Creek's, Joe Russo took the Senior gross with a beautiful 63 at Avalon in the AWGL opening event. A great day with temps in the mid 70's greeted a field of 62 and the finely conditioned seaside course provided a nice venue for some very well played rounds of golf. Millville police officer, Dan Ayars, playing out of Centerton finished first in Open gross with a 2 under 69...followed close behind a stroke back at 70 was Todd Lehman from Cinnaminson, NJ. Woodcrest pro, Zak Smith and Rich Wade from Golden Pheasant topped Open net with 66's. Back to the Seniors, Mike Owsik from M Golf in Bryn Mawr, PA shot 71 for second gross. Little Mill's Wayne DiLuigi shot 81 to go with his 17 handicap for a leading 64 in Senior net. The Super Seniors provided some serious action with Bensalem's Naz Gagliardi posting a one under 70 to take low gross honors. SS net money was shared by Ed Witczak out of Golden Pheasant and Buena Vista linkster, Lou Cresci as they turned in super rounds of 60. Both players shot 74 and each had handicaps of 14 for the winning score. Closest to pin on #3 was taken by Pennsauken's Jim Soukup with a shot just inside 13 feet. Thanks to Ted Wenner and his great staff for making our day at Avalon so enjoyable. Next Friday we tee it up at Running Deer with a 10:00AM shotgun start.

Here's Ray Fuller getting ready for his birdie putt on #11. The Running Deer player hit a real nice shot to within 20" and he jammed the putt home for one of four skins won at Avalon on opening day. All the winners are now posted on the website.

Pictured above are L to R; Mark Wiley & Gary Peart from Centerton, Running Deer's Bob Brunner and Chris Dunham playing out of Woodlake. Sure didn't look like they were suited up for winter golf and rightly so......temps stayed in the mid 70's all day and conditions at Avalon could not have been better.

November 2, 2017

Season 31 of the Atlantic Winter Golf League is set to take off tomorrow at the Avalon Golf Club. Just finished setting up the tees for the event and the golf course is in absolutely great condition. Temperatures are forecast in the mid 70's and we should have a fantastic day of golf.

October 6, 2017.....Twisted Dune is Back on the AWGL Schedule

Due to the closure of Sand Barrens for renovations, the January 12th date of the 2018 AWGL schedule has been moved to The Twisted Dune Golf Club. Just completed the arrangements with Golf Pro and GM, Jim Andres and he reports the course is in terrific condition. Twisted Dune will have limited food and beverage services and is a BYOB facility. Donuts and coffee will be on hand before tee off and we will make arrangements for sandwiches/hoagies and beverages of your choice following golf.

The website has been updated and you can download the 2017/2018 registration form to join this season. Entries have been coming in at a pretty good clip and we have five new members. Don't forget that the Christmas Scramble on December 15th at Avalon is a special two-person event and a member may bring a non-member as a partner. We've done this format the last two years and it has been very well received. Bring your neighbor, wife, son/daughter, grandson/daughter....the idea is to have a fun, holiday experience.

The second Running Deer event on March 2nd 2018 will be a Pro-Am. We will designate the pros (pros and single digit ams) and they will select their foursome team of A's (handicap 10 to 15), B's (16 to 20) and C's (21 and up). There will be one scoring division with prizes for low gross and net. The format will be best two balls of four and the players will use the tees comensurate with their age (18 to 49 BLUE), (50 to 69 WHITE) and (70 and up GOLD).

September 10, 2017.....Sand Barrens GC Sold to Union League of Philadelphia

Doug Delaney, Director of Golf at the Sand Barrens Golf Club has advised me that the Union League of Philadelphia is the new owner of this great Jersey shore golf course. The facility will be going though some renovation starting late Fall and our AWGL date of January 12, 2018 will need to be moved to another course. Over the next couple of weeks I will be contacting courses and we will come up with a suitable replacement. Sand Barrens will remain open to the public through October 15th. After that date it will become a private, members only club. If anyone has Sand Barrens gift cards from previous AWGL events, they will not be good after 10/15/2017.

August 29, 2017.....Schedule Change!

We've made a minor change in the schedule...Sea Oaks, originally set for Monday 11/27 has been moved to Monday 11/20.....a week earlier. Still a 10:00AM shotgun.

Been getting quite a few inquiries about joining the winter league and it looks like we're going to have another active season. Reminder that the Christmas Two-Person Scramble at Avalon is open to non-members playing with a member. This can be father/son or daughter, husband/wife, and any other combination as long as one person is a member.

August 13, 2017....2017/2018 AWGL Schedule is Set

The 31st season of the Atlantic Winter Golf League is set to begin at the Avalon Golf Club on Friday, November 3rd. Twenty events comprise the schedule and will again feature the Christmas Scramble at Avalon on December 15th. Please note a couple of changes in the format; the Senior Division will include amateurs age 55 to 69 (white tees) and the Super Seniors will be 70 and over (gold/yellow tees). A senior or super senior playing in the Open Division may play from the white tee in gross and net. Fortunately, we were able to maintain the current trail fee rates and this will allow us to go forward without raising entry fees.

March 25, 2017....AWGL Championship....Russo Wins Open....Faro 1st in Senior                                                Spratt Takes Super Senior

The 30th AWGL championship is in the books and 76 players toured the Avalon layout in great time....under 4 hours and the results are posted on the website. Laurel Creek's Joe Russo turned in the best round of the day and his 73 won the Open division gross. Two back of Joe was Steve Owens from Wildwood and his 75 took runner up. Playing out of Centerton, Gary Peart posted a nice 65 to win the Open net title. Philly fireman, Jim Babst from J.F. Bryne pocketed second net money with a 69. In the Senior division, 1st place gross went to another J.F. Byrne player as Tom Faro's 77 beat Mike Owsik from M Golf Center by a single shot. Robert Smith turned in 63 net...low net round of the day...and the Valleybrook linkster won Senior net. Second Senior net went to Bob Brunner from Running Deer on 68. In the Super Seniors, Running Deer's Fred Spratt carded a great 75 and walked away with first place in the gross. Only a stroke behind Fred at 76 were Mike DeCriscio from Centerton and Bensalem's Naz Gagliardi. SS net division was hotly contested and in a close race, Ed Witczak from Golden Pheasant took the top prize on 67. A shot back was Mike Stasko from White Oaks and two back were Cedar Creek's Bob Babiak and Bruce Seaman playing out of Mercer Oaks. Closes to the pin on #5 was won by Pennsauken's Joe Casey and on #15 by Bruce Schaffer from Hickory Valley.

Lots of skins were paid to the 76 player field and the Player of the Year awards went to Dan Britt in the Open division, Mike Owsik in the Seniors and Dave Jacobson in the Super Seniors.

Special thanks to Pat Smith and Al Turse for their tremendous effort each week to make the tournaments run smoothly. Much appreciate the cordial hospitality afforded us by the folks at Avalon; especially Rusty Buckingham, Ted Wenner, Dennis Jones and Phil Barber. It's always a great time at Avalon. Thanks to everyone who participated this year....stayed tuned to the website and Facebook for announcements on upcoming events and activities and the tournament schedule for the 2018 season.

March 23, 2017.......We're Set To go at Avalon Tomorrow.....9:30 AM Shotgun

Just back from setting up the Avalon golf course for the AWGL championship tomorrow, Friday...March 24th. March 18, 2017......Mike Owsik Sets AWGL Record with 10th Win of the Season

The snow storm caused us to reschedule the last regular season event as Pennsauken CCremained snow covered. Thirty six players showed up at Centerton CC and the day of tournament golf turned out nicely with temps in the mid 40's and mild winds. Running Deer's Steve Barry turned in the low round of the day and his 74 was good for low gross in the Open division. He was two better than Dan Britt from Golden Pheasant and Lodie van Tonder who plays out of Sakima. Lodie also doubled up with a win in closest to pin on #17 with a shot ending 12' 5" from the cup. Cherry Hill player, Mike Rouff had his best round of the season with an 83 to go with his 16 handicap for a four under 67 and first place in Open net. Mike Owsik, owner of the M Golf Center in Bryn Mawr, PA, notched his tenth Senior gross win of the season and set a new AWGL record. Owsik's 77 enabled him to move ahead of pro, Gary Hardin who had held the record since 1978. Hardin is the PGA pro at Northampton CC in Easton, PA and is the son of Philly sports legend, Wayne Hardin. Senior net honors went to Philly lawman, John Blackmon with a nice 73. Completing a very consistent season, Jon Mabry lead the Super Senior gross division with 75. Jon plays out of the Moorestown Field Club. Local knowledge surely helped Gene Simkins and the Centerton linkster posted a great 66 for the top spot in SS net. Thanks to Pat Sweetra, PGA pro at Centerton and Al Turse for accomodating us at the last minute and providing a very nice venue for the event.

We are now looking ahead to 2017 AWGL Championship on Friday March 24th at the Avalon Golf Club and at first glance the weather forecast looks pretty good. Temps getting to mid 50's and 0% chance of rain. We will be teeing off at 9:30 AM with a shotgun start. This is a half hour earlier than usual and make sure you give yourself enough time for the trip to Avalon. The entry fee for the championship will be $60.00 per player and the number of regular season rounds to qualify is now three (3). If possible, please text or email me with your groups and/or foursomes so I can get the holes assigned in advance. This will facilitate an easier sign in process. Following golf we will have a buffet preceding the presentation of awards and prizes. The buffet will be set up in the Tea Room adjacent to the Bar and Grill and we will be able to use the Bar and Grill room which afford us a lot more room. With the early start we are planning to start the buffet at 2:00 or a little after. Coffee and donuts will be on hand at 8:00 AM.....we'll look forward to seeing everyone for the championship.......Drive Safe.

March 15, 2017......We're on at Centerton for Friday

The S. Jersey area around Vineland, Bridgeton and Millville got no snow and very little rain and the Centerton Golf Club is in nice shape and open for the AWGL event on Friday 3/17....St. Patrick's Day. When I learned that Pennsauken had gotten 5"+ of snow and would not be playable, I started calling the Jersey Shore courses. None got snow, but very heavy rain caused severe flooding and some courses were closed and not sure to be open on Friday. Headed over to Centerton today to set up the course. We'll be playing two sets of tees...Open at about 6400 yards and Senior & Super Senior at about 6100 yards. Closest to pin on #17.

Please be reminded that the 2017 AWGL Championship....our 30th....will be played at the Avalon Golf Club on Friday 3/24 with a 9:30 shotgun start. Please get your groups/foursomes to me via text or email ASAP so I can get the starting holes assigned in advance. We'll be at Avalon by 8:00 AM with hot coffee and donuts....please travel safe.

Sea Oaks Event Tomorrow is Cancelled!!!

March 9, 2017

The forecast for the Jersey shore tomorrow has gotten worse and we are cancelling the AWGL event scheduled there. The rain/snow chance went up to 90% and the temps went down to mid to low 30's with medium winds and that's a bad combination of elements. The final regular season tournament is scheduled for 3/17 at Pennsauken.....let's hope for a break in the weather.

March 5, 2017......Four Skins for Blackmon & Giulian at Shore Gate....."Great Track"

PGA golf pro, Harry Bittner and his great staff at Shore Gate greeted us with a snow free day and we got the better ball event into the record books. Thirty six players braved high 30 temps and the gusty shore winds kept the chill close to freezing, but some real good numbers hit the scorekeeper. Low gross in the Open division went to the team of Devon Peterson, pro from Sea Oaks and am Jim Austin from Five Ponds in PA as they posted a two under 70. Playing out of Cherry Hill Mike Rouff paired up with Running Deer's Bob Brunner for 57 and the top prize in Open net. A couple of "Philly's Finest", retired police officers, John Blackmon and Bill Giulian from Juniata shot 3 under par 69 and lead the Senior gross division. Bob Howard from Deerwood and Pennsauken's Jim Soukup went low with 63 for first place money in Senior net. Blackmon and Giulian added to their prize haul for the day by garnering four skins. Super Senior gross went to Medford Village's Dave Jacobson and Jon Mabry from the Moorestown Field Club on their nice 73. Things tightened up in the Super Senior net division as Fred Spratt from Running Deer and his guest partner Bill McCabe tied Bensalem's Naz Gagliardi and Mel Hill from Indian Spring at 62 and the Spratt/McCabe tandem won a playoff of handicaps 12 to 13. Closest to the pin on #5 was taken by Gary Valley with a shot ending up 5' 5" from the cup. Pretty sure he'll share the prize with his partner, Tom Faro....both players are from Juniata GC in Philly. On #14 Dan Ayers fired a dart into the green, stopping 4' 10" away and the Millville, NJ policeman and Centerton player took the CTP prize. His partner...yours truly...looked on with grateful appreciation. It's the first time I've played the Shore Gate course and was very impressed with creative and challenging layout and extraordinarily good condition. Certainly left me with the desire to return for another try. Thanks again to Harry Bittner for making our day an enjoyable one.

Next Friday 3/10 we head up to Tuckerton, NJ and Sea Oaks and then to Pennsauken for the final regular season event on 3/17. The 2017 AWGL championship is set for Avalon on 3/24 with a 9:30 shotgun start. This championship marks the completion of the 30th season for the AWGL and down through the years we've experienced some great golf on outstanding courses. Looking forward to seeing everyone over the next couple weeks....Travel Safe!

March 2, 2017......"We're On at Shore Gate"

The weather forecast has moderated and we will be playing at Shore Gate GC tomorrow 3/3 with a 10:00 AM shotgun start. Remember, this is a two person better ball of partners event. I have about 15 teams entered so far and if you could send me your team it would be big help in getting the starting holes set up. Snow is now out of the forecast and temps have moved up a little, although the sea breezes at 10 to 15 with gusts of 30 to 40 will keep us bundled up.....dress warm.

March 1, 2017......"Not Looking Good for Friday at Shore Gate"

Checking the weather for Friday and the recent update is now calling for snow in the AM, temps in the mid 30's with 20 to 30 MPH winds, gusting to 40MPH. Snow is a definite deal breaker and if the forecast doesn't change before noon tomorrow, we will have to cancel the event at Shore Gate. Please keep an eye on the AWGL website and the Facebook page as I will be making the announcement by 12 noon tomorrow.

February 25, 2017......van Tonder Takes Open at Greate Bay with Even Par 70

Hard to believe it was late February at the shore as the temperature hit the low 70's and the field was in shorts...pants and shirts. Greate Bay was in beautiful off season condition, especially the greens which had been mowed the day before and 65 "winter" players enjoyed some good golf. Best score of the day was posted by Sakima's Lodie van Tonder and he took Open gross with an even par 70. His round included four birdies. Close behind Lodie was Jim Austin at 71 and the Five Ponds (Warminster, PA) player took second in the Open division with his best ever AWGL score. Playing out of Wildwood CC, Steve Owens III won the Open net with a 4 under 66. He shot a nice 72 to go with his six handicap. In the Senior group Mike Owsik from the M Golf Center kept his winning streak alive with a 72 and first gross. Mike has won eight times this season and one more win will give him the all-time winter league record for gross wins. Rick Wineberg from M Golf Center pocketed Senior net money with a 66. Naz Gagliardi from Bensalem kept rolling along with a win in Super Senior gross on a nice 76. SS net first prize went to Mel Hill carding a 67 and playing out of Indian Spring GC in Marlton NJ. Gary Valley snugged it up 7' 2" on #16 and the J.F. Byrne linkster won closest to pin. Special congrats go to Jim Soukup from Pennsauken....Jim holed out a nine iron second shot on the par four 8th hole for an eagle 2. Thanks to PGA pro John Petronis and the outstanding staff at Greate Bay for providing us very enjoyable day. On to Shore Gate next Friday for the better ball of partners event on 3/3. The format will 18 holes of better ball of two in three divisions with gross and net prizes. The net score will be determined by deducting 50% of the combined hadicaps from the BB gross score. There will be two closest to pin contests...one on the front and one on the back. It would be helpful if you could text or email me your team in advance so I can get the tee assignments  done. If you are bringing a partner who is not an AWGL member, please included a verifiable USGA handicap. My text number is 856-264-8405 and email address is tspga@comcast.net.

A reminder that the AWGL Championship has been moved to Friday 3/24 with a 9:30AM shotgun start. There are three events remaing on the schedule and the minimum number for championship eligibility is now at four (4) tournaments.

February 23, 2017......Better Ball of Two Event is At Shore Gate GC on March 3rd

Several AWGL members have called about the better ball tournament at Shore Gate on Friday march 3rd. Some thought it was tomorrow at Greate Bay. The Greate By event tomorrow 2/24 is an individual strokeplay tournament in the three regular divisions, with prizes for gross and net. When you get your partner (can be a non-AWGL member) please text me at 856-264-8405 so I can get the starting holes assigned in advance.

February 18, 2017......Russo, Owsik and Gagliardi Take Gross in Open, Senior & S. Senior

Atlantic City Country Club was in beautiful condition and over 60 players toured this classic course in record time.....under four hours. Joe Russo from Laurel Creek returned to action and posted a 73 to take Open Division gross. Centerton's Gary Peart went low in the net with a 5 under 65. Senior division saw Mike Owsik notch his seventh gross win of the season with a 72. The standout player from M Golf Center in Bryn Mawr, PA had the low round of the day. Playing out of Little Mill, Wayne DiLuigi's 68 won Senior net by a stroke over Philly policeman, John Blackmon. A two way tie for first in Super Senior gross was settled by a playoff of handicaps. Naz Gagliardi from Bensalem and Centerton's Bob Cisowki each carded 76's and Naz's 3 handicap beat Bob's 5....very close contest. Bob Ahrens from Scotland Run shot a steady 81 to go with his 12 handicap for a 69 and low in Super Senior net. Dave Jacobson hit it 6' 9 1/2" on #4 for closest to pin money. The Medford Village player was 1" closer than John Blackmon, playing in the final group. Following golf we had a nice time in the grill room and the ACCC staff could not have been nicer or more accomodating. It's always a lot of fun playing this great golf course and the weather was especially kind to us. Next week we head to Greate Bay in Somer's Point and the week following we're at Shore Gate. Get your partner for this event as it will be a better ball of partners (two person team). As we did in the Avalon Christmas Scramble, you may invite a non-member to be your partner and the membership fee is waived. Only condition is that the player will have verifiable handicap.

February 16, 2017......Looking Good at ACCC

Just back from a trip "down the shore" and everybody is ready for us at Atlantic City CC tomorrow. Calling for temps in mid 40's and the wind at 5 to 10 MPH....not bad. ACCC is in the midst of some major work on tees and right now has just one set of tees. The course will play at around 6000 yards and all three divisions will play the white tees. Also picked up the gift certificates from Wildwood and they will be available tomorrow.

Stopped in at Avalon to check on arrangements for the champiopnship on 3/24 and they have a rather large wedding going off at 6:00PM and we will not have the large dinning room for our season ending banquet. We worked put a plan to have the buffet set up in the Tea Room (where we were last year) and you can move into the bar/grille room where we will have the prize presentations. In order to make this work well we will need to move the shotgun start to 9:30 on 3/24. We'll keep you posted on these details as we get closer to the championship.

On Friday 2/24 we are at Greate Bay and the forecast is for high 50's and light winds with a chance of light rain. Let's keep fingers crossed that these conditions greet us. Planning a new format for the event at Shore Gate on 3/3. Going to play a better ball of partners with gross and net prizes in all three divisions. Like the Christmas Scramble at Avalon, you may bring a non-member as a partner, so long as he/she has a bona fide handicap. If anyone wants to know what "bona fide" means, call or text Naz Gagliardi.....I'm not real good at Latin or Italian.

See everyone at ACCC tomorrow......travel safe!!!

February 9, 2017......Cape May National Event is Cancelled

While the Cape only got an inch of snow, the temperature is forecast to be in the mid to low 30's with 25 mph to 40 mph winds and that means wind chills in the teens for Friday. These conditions are not good for golf and even a little dangerous for frostbite and we are cancelling the AWGL event scheduled tomorrow at CMN. We'll see how the rest of the season plays out and maybe try to reschedule this event for a Monday in late February or early March.

An additional change to the schedule involves the Championship. We are moving this event from 3/31 to 3/24....one week earlier. Please make a note of this schedule change. The 2016/2017 AWGL Championship is now scheduled for Friday March 24, 2017.

Wildwood marked the first real cold day of the current season and it could have been worse if the winds had picked up more than they did. Thanks to Fred Riedel, Wildwood's PGA professional, and his great staff for providing us a very enjoyable time. The chilly day didn't stop these guys from testing the Wildwood track.

This coming week the forecast is for temps in the 50's early in the week and then falling back to the 30's for Friday. If it looks like the wind chills are going to be in the 20's we will cancel the event. It's not worth the risk of frostbite and those conditions are just not fun. We will make the call by noon on Thursday and post info on the website and Facebook. Also, will send an email to everyone. At the least, make sure you call Cape May National before leaving on Ffriday.

January 30, 2017.....Britt Takes Open Gross with 74.....Jacobson Shoots 72 in Super Sr.

The winds blew and the temperature dropped, but that didn't stop the AWGL players from posting some very strong numbers at Golden Pheasant last Friday. Course setup was very good thanks to host PGA pro, Brian Feldschneider and AWGL member, Dan Britt. Local knowledge helped Dan post a 74 and that was good enough for a win in Open gross. The Golden Pheasant member had nines of 36-38 and included four birdies. The home boys made it a double as Todd Lehmann took Open net with 67. In the Senior division, Mike Owsik from M Golf Center made it eight wins out of nine events played with 76. He won a handicap tie breaker with Pennsauken's Paul Sikorski 3 to 6. One more win for Mike and he will tie the all-time Winter League record for gross wins at 9, set by Gary Hardin in 1980. Kurt Hermann, playing out of Woodstown, grabbed Senior net money with a nice 67. White Oaks' Mike Stasko had three Senior skins. Best score of the day was posted by Dave Jacobson as the Medford Village linkster turned an even par 72 and was low in super Senior gross. Two behind was Naz Gagliardi from Bensalem in PA and his net 70 was good for a win in Super Senior net. Naz double dipped with a victory in closest to the pin on #8 with a shot that stopped 8' 2" from the cup. Special thanks to pro, Brian Feldschneider for making our day at Golden Pheasant so enjoyable. The buffet following golf was especially nice and the GP staff could not have been more cordial and accommodating. I heard many positive comments from the players and plan to include Golden Pheasant in the tournament rotation.

Just off the phone with Fred Riedel at Wildwood and he is ready for us next Friday. Going to be a little chilly again and depending on the wind we'll probably drop to low 40's to high 30's....so dress warm. Coffee and donuts will greet you and Fred will bring in some hoagie trays for your after-golf enjoyment. Bar will be open.

Above, Lodie van Tonder from Sakima plays a low punch shot "stinger" on #9.

January 25, 2017......AWGL Players in the Top Ten of GAP Player of the Year Standings

Congratulations go out to AWGL members for finishing 2016 high in the standings of the Golf Association of Philadelphia "Player of the Year" awards. Joe Russo from Laurel Creek was third in the Senior Division, behind Chip Lutz and Glen Smeraglio. Joe finished ahead of Ray Thompson, Tom Bartolacci,George "Buddy" Marucci and Chris Lange, dominent players and winners of many amateur tournaments over the years. Running Deer's, Tom Alestock also made the list, ahead of Chris Lange, Andy Thompson and Roc Irey. In the Super Seniors we were very well represented as Dave Jacobson out of Medford Village placed fourth in a star studded field. Jacobson beat the likes of Mike Rose, Gordon Brewer, Bucky Jones and Mike Anton....all great players. Tom DiCinti from Old York at Chesterfield made the list in 15th place. These outstanding performances speak volumes for the quality of play in the winter league and I'm sure you all join me in congratulating our distinguished members.

We have the gift cards from Sand Barrens and Mays Landing and they will be available at Golden Pheasant next Friday. The folks at our last two venues were very glad we chose to play there and hope we come back. I'd go back to Mays Landing because the golf course was much improved and to get another bowl of that "She" Crab soup.....best I've ever tasted.

January 22, 2017......DuPont's Tom Walvoord Goes Low at Mays Landing with 71 in SS

We're ten events into the current season and, so far, we have been real lucky with the weather. Last Friday at Mays Landing the rain held off until the last two holes and thirty eight players posted some nice numbers. Tom Alestock from Running Deer took the top gross prize in the Open division with a 75. Fisher's Glen player, Rich Wade posted a 79 to go with his 13 handicap for a 66 and a win in Open net. Senior division gross went to Running Deer's Rocky Dare on 76. Playing out of Pennsauken, John Shepherd pocketed first place Senior net money with a nice 66. Hats off to Tom Walvoord from DuPont CC (DE) on his AWGL career low round of even par 71, good for first in Super Senior gross. Walvoord edged out Medford Village's Dave Jacobson by a single shot. SS low net went to Bob Babiak from Cedar Creek as he carded 79 less his 17 handicap for 62. Closest to the pin on #3 was won by Tom O'Connor from Mountain View as he nestled a shot 12' 11" from the pin.

Mays Landing was in the best condition I've seen in many years and the improvements and renovations in the clubhouse were very impressive. Looks like the new owners are very serious about regaining their position as one of the best public courses in New Jersey and beyond. I heard many favorable comments from the field on Friday.

Next Friday we head to Golden Pheasant for our first ever event there. Brian Feldschneider assures me the course will be in very nice condition and is looking forward to our visit. AWGL member, Dan Britt also agreed that we will be very pleased in playing GP.

January 17, 2017......Elkin's 64 Takes SS Net at Sand Barrens

Luck seems to be on our side this season and we got a great day in at Sand Barrens last Friday. 55 players teed it up in high 40 temps and the light wind conditions yeided some very good scores. Playing out of the Sakima Golf Club in Salem, NJ, Lodie von Tonder posted and even par 72 to lead the Open division gross. Woodcrest pro, Bill Torlucci got the Open net first place on 68. In the Seniors, John Blackmon from Juniata was low in gross with 77, while Pennsauken's John McKeown lead the net on 67. Low round of the day was turned in by Naz Gagliardi from Bensalem GC on nines of 36-35 for a one under gross 71 in the Super Senior's. The host club was well represented as Dan Elkins shot a net 64 to top the SS net division. Closest to the pin on #9 went to Bruce Schaffer from Hickory Valley as he stuck it 1' 3". Nice shot and he made the putt for a birdie 2. Compliments to Doug Delaney and Rob Wilburn for all their fine efforts to provides us with an enjoyable day. Always a good time at "The Barrens". Just spoke with Stan Ivins at Mays Landing and they're ready for us this coming Friday. Bill Papa reports the course is in very nice condition and we all know how nice the ML clubhouse is. See everyone on Friday 1/20 and......DRIVE SAFE.

January 12, 2017......We're Good to Go at Sand Barrens Tomorrow

With the last two days of temps in the 50's and 60's all the snow is gone at Sand Barrens and we are playing the scheduled AWGL event there tomorrow 1/13. Still a 10:00AM shotgun start and the order of play will be West nine to North nine. Open division will play the Yellow tees at 6600 yards, Senior division plays the White tee at 6350 yards and Super Senior division plays the Green tees at 5900 yards. Coffee and donuts will be ready at 8:30 and the bar and golfers grill will be open following golf with a light sandwich menu. Looking forward to seeing everyone in the AM and make sure you Travel Safe!

January 11, 2017

Just spoke with the folks at Sand Barrens and they are almost 100% snow free and we are a go for the event there on Friday. Carts are running and with a warm. dry day tomorrow they might even be 90 degrees for the tournament. Reminder that Sand Barrens is 27 holes and we have not determined which nines will be played. Three sets of tees will be used....Yellow @ 6600 yards (Open), White @ 6350 yards (Senior) and Green @ 5900 yards (Super Sr.).

Did some more checking on the tee issue and heard from a couple more AWGL members and will shelve the proposed change for the time being. We will continue to play back, middle and forward tees for the three divisions.

If you have an opinion or point of view on how we set the course up, please share it with me, as it will only help to keep the AWGL events more competitive and fun. See everyone at Sand Barrens on Friday 1/13.....drive safe!!!

January 10, 2017

We're staying in touch with Doug Delaney at Sand Barrens and hope the mild temps over the next three days will make the course playable on Friday. Keep an eye on the website and AWGL Facebook page for late news.

I'm very sorry to tell everyone that fellow AWGL member, Homie Perkins' wife Edie has passed away. There will be a viewing and funeral at the St. Matthew's Baptist Church in Williamstown, NJ from 9:00am to 11:00am tomorrow 1/11. Pat and I plan to attend and will make sure Homie and his family knows they are in our thoughts and prayers.

Over the course of the holidays I heard from a few members regarding the tees used in the Super Senior division. It was brought to my attention that the SJ Golf Association allows the Super Seniors to play the gold tees in their events, with the following exception: Super Seniors with a handicap of 10 or less play from the white tees. For the event at Sand Barrens this Friday we will impliment this new tee structure. If anyone has an opinion on this, please post on FB of email me    tspga@comcast.net

Sorry to say we are cancelling the AWGL event at Indian Spring GC tomorrow 1/6 due to the prospect of snow. Next event will be Friday 1/13 at Sand Barrens. Please check the website and Facebook for late breaking news on tournament status. Be safe in the snow the next few days.
